Vinimark's Rudiger Gretschel makes distinctive wines under his own label, Swartberg Wingerde, with old vines grown in remote Piekenierskloof. This ungrafted bushvine Palomino was planted in 1964; grapes are fermented in a mix of 2,500-litre foudres and clay amphora, with a small proportion of whole bunch. The resulting wine is complex and textured but still with lightness and enthralling layers of citrus, apples, white peach, nuts, spice, wet stone, salinity and floral notes. Captivating!
