Cava continues to suffer an image problem, which is good in the sense that it helps keep prices low, but a shame as many wine lovers miss out on what can be a fantastic sparkling wine made by the traditional, Champagne method, and without the often intrusive residual sugar that mark many a Prosecco. I'd urge you to try this great-value 2016 brut nature, which had three years' lees ageing before disgorgement – at just over a tenner it offers massive bang for your buck. Made by the same estate that produces the Society's own-label Cava (a Reserva, slightly cheaper), this Gran Reserva has lovely gentle apple and lemon fruit, some toastiness and a good complexity for the price. Fresh and food-friendly.
