Waitrose, No.1 Viña Lorea Rioja Reserva, Rioja, Spain, 2016

The Waitrose & Partners No1 range sees the supermarket work with some of the wine world's leading names. Here, in Rioja, they have joined with CVNE to craft this modern and food-friendly wine. From vines grown in the Rioja Alavesa sub-region, it's a blend of 85% Tempranillo with native grapes Mazuelo, Garnacha and Graciano. The three-year ageing was carried out in a mix of French and American oak, and the appealing red berry flavours are well balanced by toasty, mocha, cedary notes. Not here the overwhelming strawberry and cream that characterises some Riojas. Fresh and medium-bodied.
