Utiel-Requena, located near Valencia on the east coast, isn't as well know as perhaps it should be. Once an area of bulk produce, the wines are steadily improving, and this is an excellent example of the innovation and passion evident here. Blending the local Bobal grape with Tempranillo and Merlot enhances the wine's juicy character, while fermenting and ageing not just in oak, but also amphorae, adds complexity and a unique earthenware scent and texture. Bright cherry fruit mingles with savoury spices and hedgerow fruit.
