History:

In the 18th century, Pichon Lalande and Pichon Baron were one estate – among the finest in Pauillac. In the early 19th century, the vineyard was divided among the heirs of Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville, with daughter Virginie eventually inheriting what would become Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, while the remainder passed to son Raoul to become Pichon Longueville Baron. When Virginie married Count Henri de Lalande and became Comtesse de Lalande, the pair took over full control of their part of the domain and in 1840 Virginie hired Bordeaux architect Duphot to design the smart château. Eventually the Lalande family died out and in 1925 the property was purchased by Edouard and Louis Miailhe of a long line of vineyard owners and wine dealers. Edouard’s daughter May Eliane de Lancquesaing became the owner in 1978 reviving the tradition begun by Virginie of having a woman in charge. Under May Eliane’s ownership the wine gained a world-wide recognition, and to secure its future success the estate was sold in 2007 to the Rouzard family of Louis Roederer Champagne.
