History:
Grand-Puy-Lacoste, which includes parts of the gravelly ‘Grand-Puy’ elevation near the village of Pauillac, is one of the stars of Pauillac’s Fifth Growth châteaux. During the Middle Ages the terrain formed part of a larger estate belonging to a Monsieur de Guiraud, and was passed down through his family until the end of the 19th century. The first vines appeared in the mid-18th century when some of the land passed to Pierre Ducassse (the origins of neighbouring Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse). The remainder acquired its present-day title on the marriage of a daughter to François Lacoste in the mid 1800s (prior to that it had been known as Saint-Guiron after an earlier son-in-law). The 20th century wars and recession brought a change of fortunes for Lacoste and by the 1960s, under Bordeaux gourmet Raymond Dupin, it was badly ailing: rejuvenation came in 1978 at the hands of Jean-Eugène Borie. The extensive remodelling and modernistion Jean started continues today under his son François-Xavier.
