History:

Lynch-Bages lies on Pauillac’s gravelly Bages plateau, to the southwest of the

appellation and near the village of Bages itself. Thomas Lynch, the son of an Irish

textile trader who settled in Bordeaux in the late 1600s, added his family name to the vineyard when he wed Elizabeth Drooled (he already owned Lynch-Moussas). Elizabeth had earlier inherited the estate from her brother Pierre. In the 1820s, the property was sold to Swiss wine merchant Sebastian Jurine, and in 1861 sold again to negociant brothers Jérôme-Maurice and Henri Cayrou. It passed down through the Cayrou family until 1939, when it was purchased by Jean-Charles Cazes who had been managing and steadily renovating and elevating the property for five years. Under renowned grandson Jean-Michel Cazes, the quality improved still further. Since 2006, Jean-Charles’ great-grandson and namesake has been at the helm.
